Long Overdue Updates!

Posted by admin in Uncategorized - October 30, 2012 – 12:23 am

Hey friends, comrades and allies
We’ve been keeping you posted on upcoming events better in recent months but it’s been a while since we gave you all an update on whats happening overall with the space.  Below you’ll find some exciting news coming in from the different collectives.  Check it out!

General Announcements

We signed a new lease! One year later and we’re still here. Email us or look for our new suggestion box near the front door if you have ideas on how we can continue to improve this project.
We have added some new collective members which means more hours open. New hours are listed below and on our website.  We should also have some new pictures up on our website very soon!
Another project we have gotten back to is outreach to other organizations in the area to try and continue to build solid relationships with other folks doing great work around us.  We are always open to suggestions if people have ideas on groups we should be in touch with.  Finally, keep an eye out for announcements regarding our monthly work parties. Its a great way to lend us a hand keeping the space up and running and also a great place to meet some more of the folks involved with The Holdout.

Bookstore:
Now featuring natural lighting! Of course, if you’ve been by the Holdout recently, you’ve noticed we have new windows — a vast improvement to the space. We are now open Monday from 3 – 10, Tuesday from 4 – 7, Thursday from 3 – 6, and Saturday & Sunday from 12 – 6.
We recently updated our zine rack, which was built by one of our awesome collective members. We have a new science fiction/dystopian section featuring Phillip K. Dick, Margaret Atwood, Starhawk, China Mieville, Octavia Butler, Ursula K. LeGuin, and others.
We’ve also finally got some computers up and running available for the public to use which has been a great resource to be able to offer folks.

If you’re interested in volunteering or in being a part of the bookstore collective, let us know! You can reach us at bookstore@theholdout.org

Workshop:
The workshop collective is going strong with many new members.
We have just started an open propaganda studio Mondays 5-10 and Fridays 1-4. Use of, materials and instruction in silkscreen printing photoshop/indesign programs, and banner making will be available. Hell ya!
The bike workshop is still doing three days a week, Monday and Thursday 3-6 and Sat 12-4. Lots of kids are starting to use it which has been great to see.
Email them at holdoutworkshop@lists.riseup.net if you have any questions.

Events:
The Events Collective has also added a few members the last few months which has added a renewed energy to the project.  The downstairs now has a number of awesome graffiti murals up which give that area some life.  We’ve also continue to host a variety of great events and classes. The last few months have featured Know Your Rights Trainings, Allies from Mexico speaking on current issues down south, a workshop on alternative relationships and a number of book releases and discussion panels.  Keep an eye out for our weekly workshops on spanish, herbalism, nutrition, and our regular Fri needle exchange.  We’ll also be hosting a report-back for People of Color only on the Anarchist People of Color (APOC) convergence that happened recently in New Orleans…and lastly keep an eye out for our weekly “Reading Rainbow” Children’s book share- complete with puppet making and storytelling. You can always find paper calendars on the bookstore desk when you walk in for a schedule of upcoming classes/events.  Please continue to send us your ideas for classes and events that you would like to host:  events@theholdout.org

As always, thank you so much for the continuing support. Stay Tuned!

March Update

Posted by admin in Uncategorized - March 21, 2012 – 5:36 am

This month’s update might seem extra long, but that’s only because we have so much amazing news to share! Please bare with us as we dive right in.

We had our official Grand Opening party at the beginning of February, with some great skillshares and workshops during the afternoon including martial arts, radical black history, and Cumbia dance lessons.  We were delighted to see a steady stream of people coming in all afternoon, and that number only increased when we started serving dinner! After dinner we moved into the variety show with some awesome spoken word, after which everyone promptly shook their booties to some great DJs.  We put a lot of time into outreach in the neighborhood prior to the event, going door to door to talk to folks and distribute fliers.  We saw some familiar faces, but would have liked to see more people from our neighborhood. This just reminded us of how important it is to continue to work on building relationships around us and to keep putting in this work for future events. Overall we had an amazing day and night!

The Bookstore is now open regularly.  We should have their open hours up on our website shortly under the “Collectives” section.
The bike space has regular hours and is open for folks to come share knowledge on how to repair and maintain your bikes.  Email them at holdoutworkshop@lists.riseup.net to get in touch.
The Garden Collective is getting off the ground and is hosting regular meetings open to the public. We are currently in discussions with the owner and insurance companies and if all goes well this project will be a great addition to the space.
The bookstore will have a table this year at the Anarchist Bookfair.  The event is March 31st and April 1st- the bookstore will have a table on Sunday the 1st. Also, The Holdout will be parking your bikes! So ride on over this year and say hello.
The events collective has had the opportunity to host some really exciting events over the past month.  We had an excellent Know Your Rights Training to get everyone up to date on their rights when it comes to protests, arrests, jail, and dealing with the police.  We also hosted a beautiful and creative show with Annah Anti-Palindrome and friends, which was very well attended. More recently, we hosted a film screening of the movie Black August- a film about  the political prisoner George Jackson who was shot and killed at San Quentin in August of 1971.  We were lucky enough to have TCinque, who wrote and co-produced the film, with us to answer questions afterwards.

Check out our calendar for upcoming events.  Scroll over the dates in bold to see the public events for that day.  Here’s a taste of a few of them coming up:
-Wilderness First Aid for the Streets- a look at how to apply wilderness first aid skills to situations we come across in our daily lives. This 20 hour course is open to the public and will take place over two days (March 24th and 25th).
-Weekly Skillshares: we have weekly martial arts skill-shares Monday morning, Spanish and English workshops happening each weekend, and a Queer Radical figure drawing group on Monday evenings. For descriptions of these groups or for more information please check the online calendar on our website.
-We are also happy to announce that we’ll be hosting the A Cafe this year! That’s right,
the event that always kicks off the  Anarchist bookfair will be held with us in Oakland this year.  This should be a great way for people coming into town to check out the new space.

Lastly, if you’re interested in helping support this rad project there’s a few things we’re always
looking for:
-Supply donations: check out this part of our website to stay up to date on supplies we need, or get in touch with the bookstore regarding book donations.
-We also have a monthly donor group called FOTH (Friends of The Holdout). If you’re interested in signing up for that, check out the right side of our website for the link.
-Proposals: We’re specifically interested in having more skill-shares and workshops at The Holdout. If you have an idea for something you’d like to see, or a workshop you’d like to help put on, drop us an email soon!

Thanks so much for supporting this project and helping us get off the ground.  We look forward to talking, eating, teaching, learning and dancing our butts off with you soon.

Grand opening Schedule

Posted by admin in General News - February 2, 2012 – 10:16 pm

The Holdout is having its GRAND OPENING party! We are so excited to finally open the space and show it off after all of the hard work folks have put in to fix it up and get it up and running. During the day we are going to have various workshops and classes running, with an open bookstore and bike shop. We will be having a potluck dinner, followed by a variety show. We have put together a more formal schedule, so you can see exactly what’s happening when..

2-3 Presentation on the Black Panther Party
3-4 Intro to Cumbia dance class
4-5 Figure drawing

A kids’ space will be available from 1-6 and the bookstore will be open all day, noon to midnight.

At 5 pm we will have a potluck dinner. Please bring something to share if you can. Please also bring your own plates and utensils if you can/remember as it may be hard for us to provide some for all.

Folks from various collectives will be around all day to show you around, answer any questions, and help you find ways to plug in. Please come out to say hi, take a workshop, or share a meal with us!

Join us for our Grand Opening!

Posted by admin in Uncategorized - January 20, 2012 – 8:32 pm

After another busy month of decorations and preparations, The Holdout is finally ready to open its doors on February 4th! We will celebrate with a day-long extravaganza. The afternoon will have different workshops in the space. Then we’ll have an early potluck style dinner followed by a celebration at night. We’re going to do a bunch of door to door outreach before to let folks in the neighborhood know about it. Stop by briefly or come spend the whole day with us!

January has been a bustling month at the Hold out. Even though we have not been officially open, we have hosted a variety of meetings and classes, including the weekly Spanish-English Collective, a weekend long medic training, and various Occupy Oakland tactical meetings. The Workshop and Propaganda Collectives have moved in and have also opened a bike workshop. The Bookstore also had their opening day to the public which went great. The bookstore offers a variety of radical texts, with plenty of table space to sit and read, play games, or just hang out. The bookstore is planning to be open Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 and on some weekdays, which will be posted online.

The Holdout has a lot planned for the coming month. We still need help finishing sound proofing and getting the space in perfect shape for the opening .The Propaganda Collective has been given a lot of great donations and folks are excited to get into production. The Workshop has been fixing up bikes to raise funds and is planning to start having after school open hours once per week. They already have 5 or 6 bikes built and for sale so if youre interested ask them about it! Now that the Bookstore is open, they are planning to have even more events such as game nights, book readings, and a reading group. All of the collectives are working on planning our next big fundraiser sometime towards the end of February.

We now have a calendar online, so you can keep yourself posted on this and other events planned at the space!

Finally, the Hold out would like to put a call out to those interested in holding classes, meetings, or workshops in the space. Please email us at events@theholdout.org or drop by during a work party or open hours to get in touch. We’re looking forward to having even more awesome events on our schedule and to working out all of the kinks in our process!
